Last month, during the Virtuoso Travel Week, which took place in Las Vegas, Portugal was named Hottest Destination of 2018 at the Virtuoso Awards.
Virtuoso is a network of luxury travel agencies with more than 15,000 advisors worldwide, of which 9,000 are from the USA.
According to the Secretary of State for Tourism, Ana Mendes Godinho, “the award is great news and demonstrates that Portugal is asserting itself more and more as a quality tourist destination which is appealing to tourists who spend more” and that it is “especially important since the USA are the fifth main market in terms of tourism revenue”.
Luís Araújo, president of the national tourism authority, Turismo de Portugal, stressed that “Portugal should continue its promotion in the USA so Americans will continue to not only visit us but also to start considering the country a place to invest and to live”.
During the first quarter of 2018, Portugal received 354,000 tourists from North America, a significant increase of 21,3% compared to the same period last year. When combining the number of nights, number of tourists and generated revenue, this market grew 60% over the past two years.
The increase of air links between both countries, currently operated by TAP, SATA, United Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Airlines, to a record high of 91 flights per week this Summer, has largely contributed to this growth.
